This summer, my role as a Recreation Technician Intern at the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument with the Bureau of Land Management has been one of the most fulfilling and enriching experiences of my life. Reflecting on this journey, I am struck by how deeply it has influenced my professional skills and personal growth.

Adapting to a New Work Environment

One of the most notable aspects of this internship was adjusting to a new and dynamic work environment. Transitioning from a conventional office setting to the expansive, rugged landscapes of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument required a significant shift in my approach and mindset. The vast terrain presented unique challenges that demanded flexibility and adaptability. Each day brought new tasks—whether it was evaluating trail conditions, engaging in hands-on conservation efforts, or navigating unpredictable weather. This immersive setting taught me the importance of quick thinking and resourcefulness. I learned to adapt to changing conditions and developed problem-solving skills that are essential for working in such a diverse environment.

Collaborating with a Diverse Team

Another highlight of my internship was the opportunity to work closely with a diverse and dedicated team. Collaborating with park rangers, fellow interns, and other professionals emphasized the value of teamwork and effective communication. I had the chance to learn from experienced mentors who shared their expertise, fostering an environment of mutual respect and shared goals. Working together on various projects—ranging from visitor management to environmental monitoring—showed me how different perspectives and skills contribute to successful outcomes. This collaborative experience not only improved my ability to work as part of a team but also deepened my appreciation for the collective effort required in conservation and land management.

The Projects and Experiences

Throughout my internship, I participated in a range of projects that were both challenging and rewarding. Conducting trail assessments and engaging in conservation activities provided me with hands-on experience in environmental stewardship. Managing visitor services involved interacting with park guests, providing information about the monument’s natural and cultural features, and ensuring a positive experience for all. Each project offered valuable insights into the complexities of managing a national monument, and the skills I developed—from fieldwork proficiency to effective communication—will be assets in my future career.

Personal Growth and Lasting Impact

The experiences I’ve had this summer have made a lasting impression on me. The challenges of adapting to a new work environment, the joy of working with a dedicated team, and the satisfaction of contributing to meaningful projects have all contributed to my personal and professional development. This internship has equipped me with practical skills and has reinforced my commitment to environmental conservation and management.

As I reflect on this enriching summer, I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to work in such a remarkable setting. The lessons I’ve learned and the relationships I’ve built are valuable assets that I will carry with me throughout my career. This experience has been a defining chapter in my journey, and I look forward to applying the insights and skills I’ve gained as I continue to pursue my career in land management and conservation.
