During my internship as a Recreation Technician at the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, I had the opportunity to contribute to several important areas. Here’s a look at the key aspects of my role and the impact I was able to make:

Trail and Road Conditions
One of my primary responsibilities involved assisting park rangers with assessing and reporting the conditions of trails and roads. This task was crucial for ensuring the safety and accessibility of these routes for visitors. By regularly checking these areas, I helped identify potential hazards and contributed to maintaining a safe environment for all who explored the monument.
Visitor Engagement
Engaging with visitors was a highlight of my internship. I worked directly with guests to enhance their experience by providing useful information and guidance on various trails. Ensuring that visitors had a safe and enjoyable visit was a key part of my role, and it was fulfilling to see their positive reactions as they explored the natural beauty of the monument.
Environmental Conservation
My commitment to environmental stewardship was demonstrated through my involvement in various conservation activities. This included trash pickup efforts and monitoring sensitive areas to prevent graffiti and other forms of vandalism. These activities were essential for preserving the monument’s natural and cultural resources, and I took great pride in contributing to the conservation of such a remarkable landscape.
Administrative Support
In addition to fieldwork, I also provided valuable administrative support. Tasks such as shredding old sensitive documents and helping to organize and clean warehouse facilities were essential for maintaining efficient operations at the headquarters. This behind-the-scenes work was important for ensuring that the administrative side of the monument ran smoothly.
Overall, my contributions during this internship were diverse and impactful, providing me with a well-rounded experience and a deeper appreciation for the various aspects of managing and preserving a national monument.
